WHAT NOT TO PUT IN A SEPTIC SYSTEM

Non-biodegradable items: Feminine hygiene products, disposable diapers, "flushable" wipes, paper towels, cotton balls, dental floss, and cigarette butts.
Grease, fats, and oils: These can clog the pipes and drainfield.
Food waste: This includes coffee grounds, food scraps, and anything you'd use a garbage disposal for.
Harsh chemicals: This includes drain cleaners, paint, varnishes, thinners, pesticides, and motor oil. These can kill the beneficial bacteria that treat wastewater.
Medications: Pharmaceuticals and other chemicals can harm the bacteria and contaminate groundwater.
Excessive chemicals: Limit the use of strong cleaners and disinfectants. Even antibacterial soaps can harm the system's bacteria.
Other items: Cat litter, plastics, and condoms should also be kept out of the system.
